Sunshine Coast Council has selected dynamic, highly experienced leader John Baker as its new Chief Executive Officer to commence on December 16, 2024.
Mr Baker is currently the CEO at Mornington Peninsula Shire Council, which is the fifth largest local government area in Victoria, a position he has held since 2018.
He moved from the UK to Australia 10 years ago.
In that time and prior to commencing with Mornington Peninsula Shire Council, he worked across public, private and not-for-profit environments including as lead partner for Local Government Practice with Ernst & Young and KPMG.

Sunshine Coast Council won three Gold awards at the 2024 International Economic Development Council (IEDC) awards ceremony held in Denver, Colorado, in the United States.
Council’s Testing Tech in Paradise program and Sunshine Coast Incentive Assistance Program earned top accolades for innovation in marketing, technology and economic recovery efforts.
The wins reinforced the great work undertaken by Council's Economic Development branch.

REDS Annual Report highlights include gross Regional Product reaching $23.73 billion and high-value industries now providing 107,283 employment opportunities.

Community consultation is open for a proposed Temporary Local Planning Instrument (TLPI) which aims to create a greater variety of housing and accommodation opportunities in the emerging Birtinya Town Centre.
Birtinya Town Centre is the last remaining greenfield site in the area covered by the Development Control Plan for Kawana Waters (DCP) and has always been intended as a Major Regional Activity Centre with retailing, offices and high-density residential development as permitted by the Approved Master Plan No.100.

To celebrate National Recycling Week, Sunshine Coast Council and Noosa Council have teamed up with BlockTexx to hold a community textile recycling event, ‘Give a Sheet® for the Planet’.
Clean out your linen cupboards and drop-off approved items at Chancellor State College, Secondary Campus, Sippy Downs Drive, Sippy Downs or The J Noosa, 60 Noosa Drive, Noosa Heads on November 16.
All donated linen will be converted into valuable, high-grade recycled materials by BlockTexx to be used by Australian manufacturers to create new products.

Marathon's $9 million boost

The 2024 EVA Air Sunshine Coast Marathon Festival has provided a major economic uplift to the Sunshine Coast region, injecting nearly $9 million into the local economy. This figure represents an impressive increase of almost $4 million on the 2023 event, showcasing the growing success of the festival and its impact on the community.
Total attendance for the 2024 event surged to 26,539, up from 20,459 in 2023, reflecting the festival’s appeal to both locals and visitors from across Australia and overseas. The significant rise in participants and spectators has contributed to increased accommodation bookings, hospitality spending and local tourism activity, benefitting a wide range of businesses in the region.
