Golden Beach foreshore works

Thanks for subscribing to receive updates on the action we're taking at Golden Beach – including temporary works – to protect our coastline and coastal communities from the impacts from TC Alfred and the Bribie Island breakthroughs.

In short

  • TS Onslow seawall and foreshore works: Piling works completed, ready for construction of the bleachers at the northern end of the site. This included delivery and removal of a large piling rig and crane. Works continuing on the south end of the site as well. Footings for the new wall and boat ramp in front of the Navy Cadets are also progressing.
  • Diamond Head seawall: JB Pacific completing detailed design work.
  • Temporary fixes underway: Realigning the pathway from Military Jetty to Diamond Head, extending the Military Jetty sandstone block wall at hotspots further south to provide better protection and reduce the amount of sand on the pathway, where it cannot be realigned, designing a solution for Apex Park.

TS Onslow seawall and foreshore works

Works are progressing well as we partner with the Queensland Government to construct a new seawall to protect the foreshore from Nelson Street to the TS Onslow Naval Cadets site in southern Golden Beach.

We are working with the successful tenderer, Australian Marine and Civil.

Updates
  • Old structures have been removed as part of our approval.
  • Piling works completed, ready for construction for the bleachers. This required the delivery of a large piling rig and crane, which were removed early from site by an oversize vehicle on Friday 8 August (the piling rig) and Monday 11 August (the crane). Thank you for your cooperation in not parking on the Esplanade during the times advised, to enable this equipment to be removed.
  • Works are continuing on the south end of the site as well.
  • Footings for the new wall and boat ramp in front of the Navy Cadets are also progressing.
We are on track to be completed by December 2025, weather depending.

Diamond Head seawall

This seawall will protect the area between Lamerough Canal and the June Street boat ramp, Diamond Head. It’s part of the Bribie Island Breakthrough Action Plan.

Updates
  • Coastal engineering firm JB Pacific is completing detailed design work for coastal protection works and drainage improvements at Diamond Head.
  • Design and permits are expected to be completed by late 2025 and the first stage of works is expected to start around mid to late March 2026.
  • Community engagement is scheduled for late 2025, where residents and stakeholders will be invited to provide feedback on the Coastal Hazard Adaptation Precinct Planning (CHAPP) investigations and Diamond Head seawall projects.
Council has secured $1 million of vital funding towards constructing the Diamond Head seawall through Round 4 of the QCoast 2100 program.

The QCoast2100 program is jointly funded by the Queensland and Australian Governments under the Disaster Recovery Funding Arrangements (DRFA) as part of more than $152 million from the Efficiencies Funding Program 2023-24, supporting priority disaster resilience and mitigation projects across Queensland.

Whilst the QCoast 2100 funding is extremely valuable to assist Council in protecting the foreshore along Diamond Head, further funding is still required. We will be submitting the project for further funding considerations through both the joint Commonwealth-State Disaster Recovery Funding Arrangements (DRFA) exceptional circumstances packages in the wake of Tropical Cyclone Alfred, and the Disaster Ready Fund (DRF) Round 3.

Temporary fixes before construction

To help protect the area before the seawall is built, we are completing a range of temporary works which form part of the broader strategic approach. These temporary measures are designed to strengthen the area while longer-term solutions are planned.

Here's what we're doing

  • Building a sandstone wall: We have completed installing a sandstone retaining wall which can be used as seating at the Military Jetty shelter, and additional temporary sandstone block walls at Military Jetty and the Military Jetty boat ramps. We are now extending the sandstone block wall at hotspots further south to provide better temporary protection.
  • Pathway realignment between Military Jetty and Diamond Head: In some locations the combination of sandstone blocks to protect from waves and sand migration is not appropriate, so to keep the coastal pathway safe and accessible, we’re shifting its route slightly. This work began on 7 August with the concrete pour for the section of path between the two boat ramps. Further pathway realignment works will occur in the coming weeks.
  • Removing vegetation: Some trees and plants have been carefully removed to make way for the pathway realignment works.
  • Placing rocks: Large rocks are being placed along the most eroded sections of the foreshore to help stabilise the area.
  • Apex Park: We are aware this area can get covered with sand and debris from the tide. We visit the area monthly to tidy it up. If you see any urgent issues, please report to Council on 5475 7272, via the SCC app, or contact us online.
  • Apex Park: Building a sandstone block wall would not be effective in this location, so we have been working on an engineering design to extend the geotextile sandbag wall to connect to the existing rock wall at Lamerough Canal entrance. We hope to start construction for this later this year and will keep you updated.
Council is working with the Queensland Reconstruction Authority to support funding for these works where eligible.

We appreciate your patience while these important works are carried out. Keeping Golden Beach safe and enjoyable for everyone is our top priority.

Other temporary works

We are investigating other temporary works, which may include:
  • dredging and adding sand to eroded areas
  • moving sand and debris to reduce erosion
  • reducing damage to open space where feasible.
We will continue with these temporary works, depending on funding approvals.
