Moffat Beach seawall reconstruction update
Dear Moffat Beach community,
Thanks for subscribing to receive updates about local Moffat Beach projects, including the seawall reconstruction.
In short:
- Works progressing well to the western seawall, ramp and car park in time for Christmas.
- Unfortunately, an existing pine near the ramp needs removing due to safety reasons.
What's happening and why
We understand how much our community values the trees at Moffat Beach. We share that commitment and always aim to protect them wherever possible.
Unfortunately, one Cook Island pine located beside the beach access ramp has been found to be in poor condition. Its proximity to the deeper, wider and more substantial seawall has resulted in it having to be removed due to safety concerns.
While the tree may look healthy, its roots have been exposed and disturbed beyond safe limits, leaving it vulnerable to failure. Council’s arborists and an independent expert have confirmed that the risk is now too high to ignore.
The seawall design in this location is complex and highly regulated, and unfortunately, the tree’s root system – already in poor condition – has been further compromised during construction.
Root pruning has occurred, and with the seawall now in place, the likelihood of the tree failing is considered intolerable given Council's prioritisation of public safety.
Why removal is necessary
Large structural roots beneath the tree are in poor condition, run predominantly toward the park, and have been further exposed during construction. This has significantly reduced the tree’s ability to remain stable.
If the tree was to fail, it could cause serious harm to people and damage nearby infrastructure, most likely into the park and car park.
Public safety is our top priority, and after careful consideration, we have no option but to remove the tree.
This decision is consistent with Council’s advice throughout the project that trees may need to be removed if safety is compromised.
Next steps
Council’s arborist team and an independent arborist have inspected the tree twice – including after the storm on 24 November 2025 – confirming the safety risk, and very shortly the tree will be removed in a controlled and safe manner.
A replacement tree will be planted to maintain the character and greenery of Moffat Beach. The species will be carefully selected to suit the coastal environment and preserve the beach’s unique character. This is currently being reviewed by the project team, and we’ll share details with our community soon.
We know this news will be disappointing for those who love these trees, and we truly appreciate your understanding as we work to keep the beach safe for everyone.

Reminder: project timeline
We’re on track to have Stage One completed and open before Christmas, giving our community improved access to this beautiful part of the coastline just in time for the holiday season.
Here’s a reminder of our current construction schedule:
- Monday to Friday: 6am – 6pm (weather and tide permitting)
- Saturdays (intermittent): 7am – 3pm (low tide only)
- Sundays: No construction works.
We appreciate your ongoing support and feedback as we work to minimise disruption while keeping things moving. The seawall construction team remains committed to finding smart solutions that reduce impacts and keep the project on track.

Moffat Beach is still vibing
Despite the construction activity, Moffat Beach is as lively as ever. It's great seeing locals and visitors still grabbing coffees, browsing the shops and catching up at their favourite cafés.
There’s plenty of space to stretch out, whether you're picnicking, soaking up the view, going for a walk or run, or checking the surf. You might just find a new go-to spot in the park while things shift around.
Parking might be a bit tight, so it’s a great time to jump on your bike or take the bus. With 50 cent fares, getting to the beach and supporting local businesses has never been easier.
We know the works bring a bit of disruption, and we really appreciate your patience.
The improvements will be worth it, and in the meantime, Moffat Beach is still serving up sunshine, salt air and good vibes.
